The OWCA proudly launched its season of events with a memorable afternoon at the cricket, welcoming a half-century of former Wesley cricketers to the Rose Garden to watch the First XI take on Brighton Grammar on the Kroger Front Turf.
With OWs represented from every decade spanning the 1950s through to the 2010s – from both the male and female teams, the gathering was a joyful celebration of runs scored, wickets taken and lifelong connections forged at the crease.
A highlight was the coming together of the Boys’ First XI teams from 1966 and 1996, who marked significant anniversary milestones. Captains David Crow OAM (OW1966) and Nick Harrison (OW1997) shared stories and reflections from their respective seasons, 60 and 30 years on, delighting attendees with anecdotes, both tall and true, that spoke to the enduring spirit of Wesley cricket.
Adding an important perspective, Nicola Robbins (Thompson) (OW1997), member of the 1997 Girls’ First XI, spoke passionately about the challenges faced in the early days of female cricket. She reflected on the progress made since those formative years and expressed her enthusiasm for the continued growth and development of girls’ cricket within the APS system.
It was wonderful to see members of the Collegians Cricket Club in attendance, further strengthening the meaningful connections between the College, the Club and the OWCA community.
Bathed in warm sunshine and warmer company, the afternoon was a fitting celebration of the proud history of Wesley cricket and an encouraging reminder of the strong foundations supporting the next generation of both girls’ and boys’ cricketers.
