A celebration of Wesley's sporting legacy
On Friday 21 February, the Sapere Aude Bequest Society gathered under bright sunshine to watch the Wesley College Boys’ First XI take on Carey Grammar in the opening day of their two-day match on the Front Turf.

The event provided a fantastic opportunity for OWs and cricket enthusiasts to enjoy the game while reconnecting with old friends and the wider school community. Guests were treated to drinks and canapés in the Rose Garden; the perfect backdrop for cricket and conversation. OWs shared fond memories of their own cricket days at Wesley, creating a vibrant atmosphere of nostalgia.
A standout moment was the post-match Q&A session with Barry Neivandt, the Boys’ First XI Coach and Paul Montgomery (OW1982), current Head Coach of Cricket. Their passion for the game was evident as they discussed the development of the school’s cricket program, their approach to coaching both the boys' and girls' teams, and the rich history of cricket at Wesley.
As the game reached its conclusion on Day 2, Wesley emerged victorious, with Team Captain Sam, son of Stuart Anderson (OW1992), scoring an impressive 100 not out. The match was a hard-fought contest, right down to the last hour of play, with the final score Wesley 4/229 defeating Carey 225.
The afternoon served as a powerful reminder of the role that sport plays in connecting generations, as well as the enduring legacy of Wesley’s sporting community. We can’t wait to host this event again in 2026!
