Elsternwick’s delightful Term 3 production of Seussical JR. brought together an enthusiastic and dedicated cast who rose to every challenge of Ahrens and Flaherty’s imaginative and memorable score.

Raife (Year 8) as Horton the Elephant

Filled with vibrant ensemble numbers like 'Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!' as well as the emotional richness of songs like 'Notice Me' and 'Horton', the music demanded versatility and focus. The Middle School student performers embraced each challenge with open hearts and a willingness to give their all.

You don’t often get the chance to play an elephant in life, so when Raife (Year 8) was given the plum role of Horton, he trumpeted his delight.

‘Playing Horton was an unforgettable experience that helped me grow in confidence and gave me memories and friendships that I will carry for the rest of my life,’ he said.

Whether learning vocal parts, choreography or exploring character, the cast approached rehearsals with curiosity, energy and determination. Their growth was remarkable, and they brought the fantastical world of Seuss to life with joy, colour and authenticity.

Dylan (Year 9) as The Cat in the Hat

‘The students developed grit, tenacity and a genuine sense of pride in what they accomplished, whether on stage, backstage, behind cameras or follow spots, helping with makeup and costumes or welcoming our community to The National Theatre,’ said Musical Director and Co-Producer Alisa Porteous, PYP Head of Learning for The Arts. ‘This production of Seussical JR. stood as a celebration not only of their talent, but also of the growth and learning that come from creating theatre as a community.’

For June (Year 6), who was part of the ensemble, taking part was ‘one of the highlights of my year and maybe, even the best part!’ she said. ‘I’m new this year, and the musical has been a great experience to make lots of new friends.  I loved it so much!’
