Year 12 Glen Waverley student Mikayla made Wesley sport history this year, becoming the first Wesley girl to be awarded Triple Honour Colours for Athletics (2024), Cricket and Football (2025).
When presenting Mikayla with her award at the Sports Assembly back in September, Principal Nick Evans (OW1985) shared with her a delightful symmetry: he also received Triple Honour Colours for Athletics, Cricket and Football in his final year!
No surprise that sport has always been a big part of Mikayla’s life. Playing backyard cricket when she was little led to playing for the local boys’ team at age 10, moving to a girls’ team at 12 and in addition to club and Wesley cricket, playing for Victoria Metro for the past three years.
‘I only decided to pick up footy in Year 10 at Wesley. Since then, I’ve loved playing and wish I had started earlier,’ she says. ‘I did a lot of Athletics in primary school and decided to get back into it in Year 11.’
‘Through Wesley sport, I’ve learned to be disciplined, resilient and willing to take every opportunity presented to me. I’m very grateful to have led both the cricket and footy teams as Captain this year.’
Which of the three is more in her heart?
‘I love all three, but I have to admit… cricket is my favourite,’ she says. ‘For the opportunities it has given me to advance my skills, travel to compete and meet so many new people.’
‘I’m currently playing premier cricket for Prahran and am preparing for the U19 Nationals in Perth this month as part of Victoria Metro. I hope to continue to play footy next year, hopefully with some of the Wesley girls, as well as continue to pursue cricket and see where it can take me into the future.’
