With the footy season winding down and the smell of spring in the air, the Old Wesley Cricket Club is gearing up for what promises to be our most exciting season yet. Following last year’s triumphs, on and off the pitch, momentum is high and expectations even higher. The headline? Our 1st XI is heading into Division 1!
After a dominant season capped off with a Grand Final win on the St Kilda Road Front Turf, the boys in purple and gold have earned their place among the MCC competition’s top tier. This season the team is hungry to prove they belong and are ready to take on the challenge. It’s the result of years of steady building and the journey is only just beginning. Meanwhile, our 2nd XI will continue their rise in Division 4. Last season saw the emergence of a tight-knit group that mixed enthusiasm, loyalty and plenty of cricketing potential. With another year together, they’re poised to be serious contenders.
Off the field, the OWCC continues to thrive as a club where anyone, from seasoned OWs to sons, fathers and fresh faces, can find their place. Our community culture remains the heartbeat of the club and we’re proud of the friendships, families and fun that make this more than just a cricket team.
Coach Kyle Clarkson returns to steer pre-season and in-season training, while Ollie Browning (OW2011) steps in to coordinate a fresh calendar of social events. From BBQs and pub nights to a buzzing presentation evening, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to get involved if you’re wielding the willow or cheering from the sidelines.
We’re calling on all OWs, whether you’ve played before or are curious to don the whites, to get involved. Training runs are on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the Glen Waverley and St Kilda Road campuses respectively, followed by dinner and a drink nearby. We’ll also be doing some pre-season sessions at Junction Oval.
For details on joining, reach out to Rick Morris (OW2004) on 0438 081 886. It’s going to be a big year. Go Lions!
