The last few months have set the scene for several initiatives by the OWCA, including a gender inclusive OWCA Fellowship gift for OWs receiving this honour, recognition for generational families with students currently at the College and more frequent engagement of Past Presidents of the OWCA. These activities aim to continue the OWCA’s evolution as both a modern institution and a critical auxiliary association of Wesley College.
Following the recent recognition of immediate Past President Kate Evans (OW1998) as a Fellow, the Board felt it timely to establish a gender inclusive Fellowship gift. While the Fellows tie remains a gift for gentlemen receiving the honour, a ladies gift is in development. Both will receive a Fellow’s pin to be worn at College and OWCA functions. This is a legacy item which the Board proudly endorses and supports. More details about recognition for generational families will be revealed as part of next year’s 160-year celebration of the College.
In July, the OWCA hosted a dinner for past presidents, with nearly all living attending and providing sage advice which has been shared with the Board for reflection. Events such as this, along with other recent actions, are important as we work to reinforce the OWCA as a modern institution that will stand the test of time. By embracing our community’s wisdom, the OWCA is taking steps towards realising this goal.
Our affiliates continue to be well supported with great attendance at the new Collegians Car Club events and many enjoying the driving (and lunching) on their drive days. The OWCA has recently provided sponsorships for the OW Bowls Club and the Collegians X Hockey Club as part of our strategic plan to maintain strong support for these groups.
The Collegians X Hockey Club continues to be a powerhouse affiliate in all that they do, warmly embracing OWs and creating a place for them to reconnect. Their strength, both on and off the field, was evident this year as they claimed the Men’s Premiership. With a vibrant, inclusive culture and outstanding leadership, they continue to demonstrate how strong off-field values drive on-field success.
Despite fighting gallantly towards the end of the season and a triumphant final victory, the Collegians Football Club were unable to retain their Premier Division status and have been relegated to the VAFA B-division. I would like to recognise the hard work of volunteers associated with Collegians and congratulate them on a hard-fought season.
It is in times such as these that we, as a community, must band together and provide even greater support to ensure they are returned to the Premier division. If you can assist by volunteering your time, providing sponsorship or just coming along as a spectator and cheering each week, I encourage you to do so.
Board members Jen Taylor (OW2023) and Oscar Leeton (OW2024) joined me in presenting to Year 12 students at Glen Waverley and St Kilda Road campuses on their transition to university and what to expect in their lives as OWs. These programs cement the role of the OWCA in the life of our youngest members and highlight the importance our organisation can have in your life beyond school. We will continue to engage with our young leavers across the College in this way.
The annual Wesley College Gala saw a strong turnout of OWs, demonstrating the strength of our community and continued desire for engagement. I strongly encourage OWs to consider attending future Gala events. As we look toward 2026 and the 160-year anniversary celebration of the College, please consider how you may wish to engage and participate in events throughout the year. Mark your calendars, rally your year groups and prepare to celebrate the school that we all love. I look forward to seeing you there!
Yours in purple,
